Read the deed poll guide
Do I need a deed poll?
Not if you married or divorced in the UK: your marriage certificate or decree absolute is your proof. For any other change, including a new first name, a middle name or a new surname of your choosing, you need a deed poll.
How long does it take?
Order before 3pm on a working day and your deed poll is prepared the same day and sent within two working days by First Class Post, with any certified copies you ordered.
Who can be my witnesses?
Two people aged 18 or over who live in the UK, know you and are independent of you: friends, neighbours or colleagues rather than a partner, a relative or anyone at your address. They watch you sign. Instructions come with the deed poll.
How old do I have to be?
16 or over to apply for yourself. For a child of 15 or under, a parent or guardian applies, and everyone with parental responsibility must agree.
How many copies will I need?
Each organisation you update may ask for a certified copy. Most people find around ten copies is enough. You choose the number inside the application.
Is any name allowed?
Almost. It cannot be offensive, chosen for fraud, contain numbers or symbols, or use a title that is not recognised in the UK. Latin characters only.
UK Deed Poll is not a government agency. Our function is purely as a document provider for the self-declaration of an unenrolled deed poll.
